Dining with Diabetes
The Purdue University LaPorte County Extension Office will be offering "Dining With Diabetes" -- a program for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. While diabetes is a serious and costly disease, research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly, can lower their risks of complications and lead healthier and more productive life's!

In the Dining With Diabetes program, you will learn how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to make, and tasty! Recipes will be demonstrated, and participants will have an opportunity to taste each one. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise, and learn how to understand common diabetes related tests. Recipes and handouts will be given to those attending. The course will meet once a week for three weeks.

The fee is $25 per person or $30 when you attend with a friend and share course materials. Scholarships may be available for those needing financial assistance. For more information or to register, call 219-324-9407.

Language Classes
At the Michigan City Senior Center.

Spanish for Seniors: A beginning course in reading and speaking Spanish. It will include some of the culture and practices of the Latino world. Also, basic grammar will be studied.

Fundamentals of Spanish: A more detailed study into the grammar and basics of Spanish. Normally a person beginning this class will have completed the "Spanish for Seniors" classes or some other introductory class in Spanish.

Intermediate Spanish: This is a topical area study of Mexico and Latin America, its people, leaders, history, geography, cities and culture. About one-half of the class will be conducted in Spanish. The majority of the content will be on Mexico during this 13-week period.

German for Seniors: This introductory course will include reading, speaking and listening to German. In addition to basic grammar, content will include the culture and traditions of the Germanic-speaking people.

All classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays in the fall. Courses will begin on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. The courses will run for 13 weeks til mid-November. Books for the courses can be bought at the first meeting. There is NO charge for the classes. For questions, or additional information, contact Al Tieken at 219-878-8519.

Chicago Center for the Performing Arts, Chicago, IL. On an ordinary day at the Shear Madness hair salon, the regulars stop by for their weekly set and style, a little gossip, or an old fashioned shave. But when a scissor job gone bad leaves the upstairs landlady dead as a doornail, the crazy company of customers and stylists below find themselves locked in and fingered for murder. Full of mischief and mayhem, constantly snappy and sassy, and bursting with up-to-the-minute laughs, Shear Madness brings a wacky cast of characters to life. The outcome is different at every show because the audience gets to comb through the clues and solve the crime in America’s favorite comic whodunit.
