On July 31st 1978 Chief Ben Neitzel began his Law Enforcement career with the Michigan City Police Department as a patrolman. He has served within the Uniform Patrol Division, Traffic Division, Detective Bureau, and over one third of his years of service have been within the department’s administration. |

On March 13th 1989 he was promoted to the merit rank of Corporal, October 23rd 1989 promoted to the rank of Sergeant and then on September 1st 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. In June 1997 Chief Neitzel was appointed as Chief of Services where he served until September 20th 2002. After returning to the Uniform Patrol Division for a short period of time he was then reassigned to the Detective Bureau as the Commander. On July 2nd 2004 Mayor Charles Oberlie appointed Chief Neitzel as the Chief where he has proudly served the members of the department for the past six years. During his tenure as Chief he has served on the United States Attorney’s Office executive advisory board, Laporte County 911 advisory board, Police pension board for 25+ years, previous vice-president of the Fraternal Order of Police, member of the Blue Knights, served on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Michigan City, and has volunteered as a mentor with Hours for Hours mentoring. He is also the recipient of six (6) Letters of Commendation, Three (3) exceptional service awards, and numerous letters of appreciation. Most recently in July he was awarded the “Cliff Arnold Award” by the Michigan City Lions Club.
